Gain control over your boiler feedwater!

The Pyxis IK-2000 Series GUARDIAN Boiler Feedwater Analyzer, combined with a Walchem Intuition-9, is the tool of choice for water treatment professionals to gain control over the critical parameters of industrial boiler feedwater, which determine boiler lifetime, energy efficiency, water management and chemical consumption.

The well-known challenge in analyzing feedwater, as opposed to boiler water itself, is the low concentration of dissolved substances. The Guardian panel overcomes this, owing to the exceptional sensitivity of the Pyxis sensors. The following parameters are measured:

• Dissolved oxygen is highly reactive at the extreme temperature and pressure conditions of a steam boiler, resulting in very rapid corrosion;
• Sulfite is dosed to neutralize reactive oxygen (by conversion to sulfates);
• pH is a key parameter for corrosion and scale formation, as well as for the reactivity of the dosed chemicals;
• Temperature: critical for protection of sensors;
• Conductivity, like pH, is indicative of corrosion potential, scaling, foaming, and ion carryover into the steam (reduced purity);
• Fluorescein: a fluorescent tracer that allows indirect monitoring of the mass concentration of an anti-scalant or corrosion inhibitor.

To protect the sensors from excessive heat, the incoming sample is cooled by a flow-adjustable cooler (left image). As a second safety measure, an electrical valve ensures that the sensors are not exposed if the temperature would exceed a selected threshold.

The Powerpack Pro provides direct access to the “brain” of each sensor via Modbus (RTU) connectivity. It serves as a local display for real-time monitoring and as the interface for calibration and troubleshooting. The raw values are converted into an analog signal, which is transmitted to the Walchem Intuition-9. The Intuition manages the desired boiler automation, including control of the blowdown valve and chemical dosing.
